Liesel Hindmann gives focus to a steampowered Secret Garden and the third Aetherfest in December's Backing Steam!
Hello readers, and welcome to December’s Backing Steam! November was a successful month for the projects featured. The World of Steam raised $116,431 and the Laser Lace Letters raised $17,962. Congratulations to the both of them!
Now, I know December is a stressful month for everyone with the holidays upon us, but it’s also the perfect time to back a crowdfunding project if you haven’t yet this year! The first featured for this month is The Secret Garden: A Steampunk Motion Picture for All Ages. Directed by Atlanta filmmaker Owen Smith and featuring work from Erin Bushko of Penny Dreadful Productions, this production promises to be a wonderful and whimsical steampunk adaptation of the classic Frances Hodgson Burnett novel. The production is hoping to raise $150,000 by December 29, but is currently only at $1,552 raised. There are plenty of great incentives to get the project off the ground, including adorable Dirigible Dolls like the one Mary will have in the film, replicas of the key Mary uses to enter the garden, downloads and DVDs of the film, the soundtrack, watch replicas, and a design book of everything that goes into production of the film? Doesn’t that sound wonderful? Plus, you’ll get the feeling of knowing you helped make something steampunk that your whole family can enjoy!
Also raising money this month is Aetherfest in San Antonio, Texas. Created by the San Antonio Neo-Victorian Association, Aetherfest is heading into its third year in 2013! However, they do need some help to make the event bigger and better than ever. Which is where its GoFundMe page comes in. Incentives for helping Aetherfest include being thanked in the program, entrance into the 2013 event at both regular and VIP levels with extra perks for your support, and unique badges. And the knowledge that you helped a convention grow, of course! There is no deadline for this project, but SANVA is looking to raise $5,000 to help the con get to where it needs to be.
Of course, you can always give back to your community this holiday season. See if your local steampunk group is holding any donation drives for money, toys, or food. Or just give on your own. Because kindness and giving is universal.
Backing Steam will return in 2013 with more projects, but for now, have the happiest of holidays, a wonderful new year, and may your steam power always have backup.
